There are many interpretations of word “Diwali”.

  • According to the Hindu Studies and Sustainability faculty at the Graduate Theological Union, the term “Diwali” is derived from the Sanskrit word “dīpāvalī” which meansrows of light”.
  • According to Dr Bihani Sarkar, Sanskrit lecturer at the University of Oxford, said the origins of Diwali are shrouded in mystery and that the festival means different things to different regions in India.
  • However, the significance of the celebration is similar irrespective of names, i.e., “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.
